our cnn correspondents across israel as well as in gaza right now. earlier in the day, i went to orbkalon where i saw what was going on firsthand on the israeli side of the border. as soon as we got there, the sirens actually started going on. you could see people running towards shelters. i started running after israeli soldiers demanded that all of us -- our cnn crew, myself, we get to a shelter. usually they have about 30 seconds once the sirens go off before there actually is a rocket or missile that reaches the ground. in this particular case, when we were running, we got to a shelter. it was packed with soldiers, with civilians. and then we finally heard that thud. in this particular case, that iron dome, the israeli anti-missile defense shield, which has been financed at least in some measure by the united states, it worked. and the incoming rokts and missiles were destroyed in the air. later we walked outside and saw that plume of smoke showing those missiles, the rockets had been destroyed. earlier in the day at that same school where we had been -- the iron dome didn

. >>> "cnn newsroom" continues right now with deb feyerick. hey, deb. >> thanks so much, suzanne. i'm deborah feyerick in for brooke baldwin. and we begin with the escalating crisis in the middle east as violence rages between israel and militants in gaza. more casualties, more deaths, fatalities doubling over the last day. gaza's rocket strikes which hit israel's two largest cities, jerusalem and tel aviv, have brought a swift and powerful response. israel is focused on taking out hamas' iranian supplied rockets which can travel up to 45 miles, the farthest ever. hamas has been firing rockets for years as a way to end israel's blockade of supplies into gaza. terms of a potential cease-fire are being brokered by egypt, turkey and qatari officials. israeli defense forces targeted a media building in gaza, aiming at four senior hamas operatives they believed were inside. and two people died. it is not clear if they were the ones designated as the hamas targets. hamas, which grew out of the muslim brotherhood, seized in our gaza in 2007. since then, the group has become increasingly militarized.

a break the no tax pledge. that is a hopeful sign, folks, because a new cnn/orc poll shows more than two thirds of americans believe a trip over that cliff would create major problems, perhaps even a crisis. cnn political editor paul steinhauser is live from washington, d.c. this morning. nice to see you, paul. so the fiscal cliff triggers back-breaking tax hikes and massive spending cuts. you've got more numbers that show what type of budget plan americans actually prefer. >> exactly. one of the big arguments, zoraida, is should it be all spending cuts to get us there or tax increases, as well? brand-new numbers just out from cnn/orc. only about one in three say whatever deal should be struck should be just spending cuts. but almost seven in ten, two thirds of americans say the plan should include spending cuts and tax increases. our poll indicates americans are not so optimistic a deal will get done and if it doesn't get done, who gets the blame? look at this right here, about 45% say republicans in congress will be blamed if there is no deal and the country falls off the fiscal cliff.

center. if you remember in a lot of our jobs, we have cnn or c-span drilling but we did not have it on and i was moving from one building to another. my first reaction, will have self preservation, was first and foremost, i just ran my pantyhose and i have to refer general. this is not a good sign. my second reaction is there is a lot of smoke coming out of that building. one of the privileges i had is parking. the reality is i ran to my car, we got people out of that building and from that point on, our world in the united states and around the world has changed. that is where we move forward to today's event. because cyber has taken a huge role and place in the world since. very soon after 9/11, the u.s. entered into a global war on terror that started in afghanistan, went to iraq, and back to afghanistan. the military will be pulling out next year. there will be peacekeeping and thereato trooposs, is a huge challenge. we will continue to address what needs to be done in that environment. none of that is done without our dependence and involvement in the cyber war. technology d
